The Mustang convertible was a shocker: I've had a Mercedes and SAAB, both fully loaded luxury convertibles, and planned to buy another European luxury conv. Narrowed it down to SAAB, Jag, BMW, all 2007's. Tried the Mustang for fun, expecting cheap craftsmanship (all those stereotypes about American cars being junk). After test-driving the SAAB, Jag, and BMW, I took the Mustang! Set out to spend up to $80K and got everything I wanted in a car for about $30K new. It lets in more road noise than the other brands, and has some plastic or 'pleather' where the other brands use leather or burled woods. It's not as powerful in sudden pick-up, but I don't need to drag-race or suddenly accelerate in my daily 90-mi commute. Those are the only ways in which the Euro models were better. In all other ways, the Mustang compares in comfort, safety, and power. And, unlike the others, it is a Muscle Car, which I am quite unexpectedly enjoying: it's thrilling to hear the engine growl and see other drivers' slightly intimidated looks. I'm actually a shy schoolteacher, but the Mustang brings out the gorilla in me quite pleasingly. Small flaws: the back windows don't go down separately from each other (prefer to put just one down for my dog, and keep the other up so I'm not wasting the A/C); doors rattle when the bass is on a normal setting (a neighbor says that's an easy at-home fix); need more pockets and a bigger glove box (no place to put maps, note pad, CDs); placement of cup holders makes (automatic) shifting awkward if I put a water bottle or other medium-sized or larger drink there. The Mustang is surprisingly versatile: some of its models can be souped up for young guys/gals who want muscle and don't care about the 'comfort group' options . . . or it can be loaded for those of us who are used to the pampering of European luxury models. My model has both, and I could not be any happier! |
