What's New for the 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
Chevrolet has made significant mechanical and styling upgrades to its Monte Carlo coupe this year. The major mechanical change is the introduction of a trio of new engines. Last year's normally aspirated engines were fuel-efficient but not particularly sporty. They've been replaced by two new V6s with variable valve timing. There's a 211-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 for the entry-level LS and mid-grade LT trim and a 240-hp, 3.9-liter V6 that's standard on the new luxury-oriented LTZ trim and optional on the LT. The performance-biased SS trim, meanwhile, drop kicks its supercharged V6 in favor of a 303-hp, 5.3-liter V8. Other hardware updates include a revised suspension and upgraded brakes with a better ABS system. On the inside, there's an updated instrument panel, standard side airbags and upgraded front airbags, new seats, and feature-improved audio systems. OnStar telematics is also standard this year. Finishing up the changes is a refresh of the exterior, which includes new front and rear fascias and new wheel designs.

Advantages of the 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo:

  • Powerful engine choices
  • Affordable price
  • Comfortable seats
  • Big trunk

Objections to the 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo:

  • Lacks the polish and upscale features of other midsize coupes
  • Front-drive layout snubs the SS's V8 potential

Editor's Advice:
As a personal luxury coupe, the Monte Carlo has moved up several positions for 2006. Its new engines firmly bolster the car's performance image, even if it is more image than real capability – the SS's new 303-hp spec looks fantastic in a magazine ad but expect a lot of torque steer off the line and nose-heavy handling around tight corners. The interior improvements are also welcome. Drive one and you might just like it. But we're still not really sold. Dodge's new Charger, even if it really is a sedan, packs more ultimate firepower and directs it to the proper wheels. And in terms of polish and refinement, the Monte is still in the draft of the Honda Accord coupe and Toyota Camry Solara.
