2 transmission failures and now an engine failure at less than 50,000 miles.
Advice to buyer:
Get the extended warranty package
Detailed review:
I am the original owner of this 2001 Toyota Tacoma short cab 4wd. The vehicle handles great, has good power and for a truck excellent handling on paved roads. Fuel mileage is first class. Off road performance is supple and smooth, the large 16' tires allow climbing over obstacles, but the OEM dunlops do not have a good tread pattern for muddy conditions. Very rough roads require some ballast in the bed. Cruising at high speed takes places with little or no engine noise. The experience has been marred by transmission problems and now an engine failure. Getting warranty service has been problematic.
