Prerunner Extracab V-6 with tow package and 265/75/15 tires: This truck performs well. Lighter than 4x4, which enhances acceleration and off-road mobility; however, 4x4 would be helpful in bad weather conditions. Engine is smooth and the torque band is wide--good power (about 80% of max torque) right at 2500 rpm.
Would recommend extended or double-cab to potential buyers because regular cab is too small for all but single guys and gals with no friends or equipment to carry around.
Reliability is superb. This is my 2nd tacoma and I have put 42,000 miles on it with zero problems. I change my oil religiously every 2500 miles, and other than that, gas is the only requirement.
Noise at highway speed is not overbearing but just annoying at times. I like to hear my music, and on certain types of pavement a lot of road noise gets transmitted to the cockpit. Realize this is a product of suspension, tires, sound isolation, etc., but I had to list a complaint, so this is it.
