Performance and handling. |
Least favorite feature: |
Lack of room in the rear seat; no 60/40 split-folding rear seat available; and hard plastic on back of front seats. |
Advice to buyer: |
Shop around. There are other mid-size cars that are as good or better, yet have a better or just as good price. |
Detailed review: |
With having two compact cars and a baby on the way, I wanted to get a mid-size sedan that had a V-6 engine and anti-lock brakes. Since Mitsubishi was offering 1.9% financing for 60-months, I gave the Galant a look. I test drove the ES V-6 model, which included the premium package (side air bags, security system, power sunroof, adjustable lumbar support, premium AM/FM stereo radio with CD) and leather seats. It is a stylish looking car. It seems to have good build quality. The V-6 is powerful. The suspension seemed firm, so it handled well, yet the ride was still pleasant. I felt like I was driving a European sport sedan. The interior is nicely laid out. Unfortunately, I was looking for extra room in the rear seat, and the Galant didn't offer much more, if any, than the car I was trading in. When I compared the rear seat's leg room and head room dimensions to other mid-size cars, it was comparable on paper, but when I sat in it, that was a different story. With the driver's seat in the positon that I like, I sat behind it in the rear seat, and my knees rubbed against the front seat's hard plastic backing, and I couldn't sit up straigh, because my head touched the roof too much. Also, since it's not a wide as other mid-size cars, it was lacking in shoulder and hip room in the rear seat. In addition, road and wind noise was a little too much. Overall, it is a nice car, but it's on the pricey side. I opted for the Hyundai Sonata GLS V-6 with Package 13, which is similarly equipped to the Galant LS (the highest trim level), yet about $3,000 less...In addition to costing less, it has much more rear seat space, it keeps out road and wind noise better, and it has a 60/40 split-folding rear seat compared to the Galant's little pass-through hole. |
