Advice to buyer: |
Test drive the Grand Cherokee and the 4Runner. These are the only ones worth looking at. |
Detailed review: |
Great handler, lacks power. Just climbing (and it is a climb) into the truck, you notice the quality of the fit and finish (both interior and exterior). Controls are good looking and ergonomically placed, without the cheap-looking controls like in a Chevy Tahoe. I've always been a sucker for looks, and the aggressive stance of this truck bowls me over every time. The ride is smooth (for a truck) but could use some stiffening up to mask some of the bumpiness in the ride. Though reliable, the engine still lacks power and just can't compete with the V-8's of the domestics. The top of the line engine is a 6 cylinder with 183 hp, which can't be fairly compared to the top of the line Grand Cherokee, which is a V8 with 235 hp. Despite that, this is a great truck, with great handling, reliability, quality, gas mileage, and not to mention, looks. I bought a new 4Runner in 1991, and even with the abuse I dished out on it (including hardcore off roading), it ran smoothly without any problems the whole time I owned it. And I still managed to sell it after 7 years for 60% of its original price! (Paid 17,000 in 1991, sold it for 9500 in 1998 - would've got even more if there weren't so many off-roading dings). I can't find any other truck that has a higher resale value. By the way, my buddy had a brand new Jeep Cherokee, and many times he couldn't go off-roading with me because his Jeep was in the shop. I have another friend too, that is currently having problems with his 98 Grand Cherokee. So between the Jeep and the Toyota, you're choosing either power or reliability, respectively. With a baby on the way, I have to go with the security of reliability. The only regret I had with my previous 4Runner was not trading it in for a new one (I got a convertible instead). |
