Though one of our editors described the all-new 2007 Jeep Compass as “low and squat, with broad shoulders and fender panels that stick out like a fat guy’s belly roll” Jeep is hoping that buyers will simply see this little crossover as their next ride of choice. The front-wheel-drive Compass is powered by a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine driven by either a five-speed manual or a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). Standard features include standard side-curtain airbags and traction control, while options include 18-inch chrome wheels, a sunroof, body-color body side moldings, and all-wheel-drive traction. Jeep’s other new small ‘ute, the 2007 Patriot, will be available with a true four-wheel-drive system with a transfer case. Prices for the 2007 Jeep Compass start at about $16,000 for the front-wheel-drive Sport and run to about $22,000 for an all-wheel-drive Limited model.
